Badger Services: Habitat Design

What is Habitat Design for Badgers?

It is sometimes necessary to create new badger habitat as part of a development either as part of a Planning Condition to create onsite habitat for a retained population; create new habitat for enhancement; or develop an alternative foraging area close to their existing habitat.

In these instances, it is necessary to design the habitat in a manner proportionate to the impact. The loss of foraging habitat alone can often be mitigated through small modifications in the design of the new landscaping, or the integration of appropriate species into new hedgerows or woodland copses. Sometimes a more extensive design is required, to ensure continued freedom of access to the range of resources which badgers require including foraging areas, commuting routes and access to replacement sett-building habitat.

How can LSC help?

The team at LSC has been widely involved in the design of badger habitats to support a wide range of different types and scales of development. We will draw on our extensive experience to design the optimal habitat provision for badgers, working with the space and constraints particular to your site.

Our habitat designs take into account the Best Practice Guidelines outlined by the Badger Trust and Natural England, and our reports consistently provide the information required by our clients to secure Planning Permission.

Badgers require a range of resources for a clan to thrive, including sett-building habitat, connectivity and a range of foraging habitats to reflect the seasonal variation in the availability of different food resources.
