What is a Badger Licence?
Badger Licences are also sometimes known as Derogation Licences. These are licences granted by Natural England to permit an activity which would otherwise be illegal. This is usually the disturbance or destruction of a sett and the clan of badgers which use it.
A Licence details how you will undertake the activity in such a way that the impacts are minimised and the Conservation Status of the species is protected. This often entails the closure of a sett using one-way gates to ensure all badgers can leave the sett but cannot return. If this is a minor sett, then there is often no requirement for further works but closure of a major sett may require the creation of a new, artificial sett.
How can LSC help?
Our experienced Ecologists at LSC have proven track records in successfully obtaining licences on behalf of our clients. We work alongside architects and designers to ensure that replacement habitats or setts are integrated, where required, with minimal impact upon the design, and provide a proportionate package of measures to address the risks and impacts to badgers and their setts.
LSC are able to provide the full range of works - from surveys through to Licence application and Supervision of Works. We are also competent to take on the task of applying for a Licence following receipt of Planning Permission.
We have previously worked closely with Natural England through the Discretionary Advice Service (DAS) to ensure that we provide the best service and outcomes for our client in difficult or unusual situations and would be happy to explore this option with you, where it may be of benefit.
