Badger Services - Sett Creation

What is Sett Creation for Badgers?

Where a sett is removed on site, there is sometimes a requirement to create a new replacement sett for the badger colony. This needs to be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Badger colonies usually have several setts - a main sett as well as annexes, subsidiaries and outliers. A careful and detailed badger survey can identify which kind of sett, or setts, you have on your site. Closure of outlier setts often does not require any replacement; whereas the closure of a main sett will often necessitate the creation of a new artificial badger sett.

The new badger sett should include chambers and tunnels which can support a clan, and offer them opportunities to expand and create new chambers and tunnels over time. Careful timing and enticement is required to ensure that the badgers identify and use the new sett before closure of the old sett.

How can LSC help?

We have been involved in the successful design and implementation of artificial badger setts following the closure of main badger setts. We would bring this experience to your site, to ensure that your works can proceed and the long-term safety and viability of the badger population is secured.
