Bat Services: Licence Applications
What is a Bat Licence?
Bat Licences are often known as European Protected Species Mitigation Licences (EPSML's) or Derogation Licences. These are licences granted by Natural England to permit an activity which would otherwise be illegal. This is usually the modification or destruction of a roost, or the disturbance of bats.
An EPSML details how you will undertake the activity in such a way that the impacts are minimised and the Conservation Status of the species is protected. This might be the creation of a replacement roost to compensate for the one being destroyed, or the supervision of works by a Licenced Bat Worker to ensure that bats identified during works are unharmed.
How can LSC help?
Our Licenced Bat Workers at LSC have proven track records in successfully obtaining EPSML's on behalf of our clients. We work alongside architects to ensure that replacement roosts are integrated, where required, with minimal impact upon the design, and provide a proportionate package of measures to address the risks and impacts to bats and their roosts.
The best outcomes are achieved when LSC are able to provide continuity and expert guidance through the full range of works - from surveys through to EPSML application and Supervision of Works. We will, however, work to ensure a positive outcome for our clients regardless of the project stage when we are commissioned - this includes applying for an EPSML following receipt of Planning Permission.
We have previously worked closely with Natural England through the Discretionary Advice Service (DAS) to ensure that we provide the best service and outcomes for our client in difficult or unusual situations and would be happy to explore this option with you where it may be of benefit.
