ECoW and Site Supervision

What is ECoW and Site Supervision?

Once your project has been granted Planning Permission, there is often still work to do to ensure compliance with the legislation, sometimes enforced through the Mitigation Strategy or Planning Conditions. This might include the presence of an Ecologist on site to advise and direct works to ensure that protected species are not impacted. Examples include checking for nesting birds during the breeding season, searching areas of dense scrub for badger setts alongside a clearance team, or conducting a careful search of a log pile to check for sheltering reptiles and amphibians.

Larger schemes frequently employ an Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) who works on a site alongside the contractors over an extended period to ensure that works proceed with legislative compliance. In other instances, a single visit prior to vegetation clearance is all that is required to keep your contractors on the right side of the law.

How can LSC help?

We have a proven track record of providing supportive and pragmatic supervision services when undertaking site clearance works with regards to a range of habitats and protected species. This includes Ecological Clerk of Works roles, as well as one-off tasks such as scrub clearance to allow works to start.

We would bring this experience to your site, to ensure that your works can take place as quickly and effectively as possible whilst ensuring that protected species are identified and protected if present.

Precautionary strimming of grassland to allow the ecologist to search the working area for great crested newts prior to trial pit works commencing on site. This allowed the pre-commencement works to start before a licence was in hand, therefore minimising delays to the programme.
