Bird Services - Pre-Clearance Nesting Surveys and Site Supervision

What are Nesting Surveys and Site Supervision?

UK legislation protects wild birds from killing and injuring, and their nests from disturbance or destruction. If your works require the removal of potential nesting habitat during the breeding season which is considered to run from March - August inclusive, then it may be necessary for an ecologist to undertake a pre-clearance nesting check and perhaps supervision of initial clearance works in order to ensure that any nests present are identified and left undisturbed until the chicks have fledged.

A pre-clearance nesting check involves careful observation of a habitat area, by a suitably qualified ecologist, to watch for behaviour indicating a nest is present, such as a parent arriving with nesting material, or with food for the young. This allows the nest to be identified without disturbance, and the ecologist can identify a suitable buffer area to be left in place around the nest until the chicks have fledged. Where this survey is not practicable, for example where the vegetation is too dense, supervision would allow an ecologist to provide advice and direction on how to undertake clearance works in such a way as to minimise risk to nesting birds, whilst carrying out inspections of locations where nests might be found. This means that your site can be cleared with confidence that your contractors are working within the law to avoid killing or injuring of wild birds or their nests.

How can LSC help?

We have a good track record of providing supportive and pragmatic supervision services when undertaking site clearance works with regards to nesting birds. We would bring this experience to your site, to ensure that your works can take place as quickly and effectively as possible whilst ensuring that nests are identified and protected if present.
